O'Fallon, MO (KSDK) - A woman and her daughter with ties to the St. Louis area were found shot to death inside their home in a San Francisco Bay area suburb.

Amy Freeman Burton, 37, and her 13-year-old daughter, Ainsley Freeman, used to live in O'Fallon, Missouri.

They moved to Pleasanton, California in December where they were found dead Monday night.

It was only a few months ago that Ainsley Freeman was roaming the halls of South Middle school in O'Fallon.

She made quite an impression with her grades and personality and now this tragedy is having an impact at the school.

A crisis counselor is connecting with Ainsley's friends to offer support if they need it.

The mother was dead when emergency crews arrived. Ainsley died at a hospital.

Investigators are waiting for autopsy results and, at this point, are not saying if this is a double murder or a murder/suicide.

The family moved from O'Fallon late last year after Amy's husband got an IT job in California.

At the school, Ainsley is remembered as a bright student with a good heart.

"The saddest part about it is because she was so dedicated to her academics and such a genuinely good person, you knew that if she had the opportunity, she was going to do really great things with her life and to find out that it is cut short is extremely disappointing," said South Middle School Principal Monte Massey.

Police say Amy Burton's husband is a person of interest in the case, but is not considered a suspect.
