Chesterfield, MO (KSDK) - Hundreds of young gymnasts stood in line this afternoon to meet Olympic gold medalist Kerri Strug at Chesterfield Mall.
Strug is in town for the weekend to promote the 2012 U.S. Gymnastics Championships that will be held here this June.
Friday night, she's throwing out the first pitch at the Cardinals-Braves game.
Strug is best known for her 1996 Olympic performance where she competed with a strained ankle and went on to win the gold.
She says the U.S. championships are an amazing opportunity for young gymnasts to get inspired and see how far the sport can take them.
"The world's best gymnasts, in my mind, Team USA is definitely on top," Strug said. "They're going to be right here, in their own backyard. That's not an opportunity that you have all the time. These athletes are a great example for our youth, what they signify and what they're going through in their quest for London."
The Visa U.S. Gymnastics Championships run from June 7-10 at Chaifetz Arena. Gymnasts are competing for a spot on the U.S. national team and a chance to compete in the 2012 summer games.
