Collinsville, IL (KSDK) - When the career of an athlete is over, they usually have choices for the future.

But that is not always the case for a thoroughbred. Sometimes the end of a racing career means the end altogether.

There are 850 beautiful thoroughbreds at Fairmount Park Race Track. They weigh about 1000 pounds and can gallop about 30 miles per hour. But when they can no longer run and compete they often face a grim future.

Lanny Brooks and his wife of 36 years, Janice, love thoroughbreds and own 25 of them. They feel a sense a responsibility to protect all horses.

The Brooks plan on doing it a creative way by placing 20 thoroughbreds to start at the Vandalia State Correctional Facility.
