St. Louis County (KSDK) - A new law in St. Louis County is taking aim at the frequent theft of copper.

The St. Louis County Council unanimously passes a new measure this week.

It hopes to restrict the purchase and sale of catalytic converters and air conditioner parts.

The new law requires anyone selling scrap metal to present a valid ID, and dealers must keep a computer database of all transactions.

About one-third of county burglaries involve the theft of scrap metal from foreclosed or vacant houses.
