East St. Louis, IL (KSDK) - The bodies of a man and a woman have been found inside an East St. Louis home.
NewsChannel 5 learned around 2 p.m. the bodies were found inside a home on North 23rd Street and Ohio.
The bodies belong to a 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman believed to be husband and wife. Investigators believe they died from gunshot wounds. Illinois State Police and East St. Louis Police also found two children alive inside the home.
The 1-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy were covered in what investigators believe is the blood of the two adults. They are believed to be the children of one or both the adults. Investigators say it appears the children had been crawling around on the bodies of the two adults.
Captain Jim Morrisey with the Illinois State Police says the kids were transported to a local hospital. They are conscious and alert, and do not appear to be physically wounded.
Police discovered the bodies as a result of a well-being check requested by relatives who had not heard from the couple in a few days.
A woman on the scene says it is her niece and niece's husband who live in the home.
Morrisey says they are not speculating on whether this was a murder-suicide, or whether somebody came in from outside and killed the two adults, but it is being investigated as a homicide.
Much of the focus right now is on the two children because investigators say the adults' bodies could have been in the home for days.
