Warren County, MO (KSDK) - A police pursuit ends with the suspect dead. The police chief in Truesdale, Missouri revealed why his officer was following the man.

In a statement, the police chief said the driver, 27-year-old Ted Fitzgerald, sped by his officer who was patrolling on a feeder road to Interstate 70.

But Fitzgerald lost control of his truck, hit a guardrail and was thrown from the truck to his death when the vehicle overturned in the intersection.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating the case. An accident reconstruction team just was at the scene late Monday.

A Highway Patrol spokesman says it's not even clear if Fitzgerald knew the officer was chasing him.

The spokesman says after Fitzgerald passed the officer, he put on his lights and siren, turned around and followed.

The police chief says his officer lost site of the Chevy truck and was about to stop the chase when he came across the accident. After the truck overturned it hit another guardrail and righted itself.

Fitzgerald died at the scene. His mother told NewsChannel 5 he was a good-hearted man, although he did have trouble with the law.

He was on probation for drug convictions.
