St. Louis, MO (KSDK) -- Monsanto Company donated $3 million for the development of an international online resource for all known plant species, the Missouri Botanical Garden said Tuesday.
The database is called World Flora Online, and it will involve the developing efforts of leading botanical institutions worldwide. These institutions include the Missouri Botanical Garden, The New York Botanical Garden, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Once developed, World Flora Online will be an extensive online resource for approximately 400,000 known plant species worldwide. Users of the site will include policy makers and planners, botanists, ecologists, geneticists, and other scientists worldwide.
With Monsanto's donation, Missouri Botanical Gardens will be able to contribute to this international effort until 2015.
The Missouri Botanical Garden says it is at the forefront of the urgent struggle to discover, understand and conserve the world's botanical diversity as species and habitats rapidly diminish. They currently have scientists working in 35 countries on six continents around the globe.
