Belleville, IL (KSDK) - A Belleville police officer shot and killed Eric Gonzales during an investigation into a report of a disturbance at a tavern, according to the St. Clair county coroner.
Police said they received a call around 10 a.m. Wednesday about two males breaking windows to cars, residences and at Foley's Tavern in the 7700 block of West Main Street.
When police arrived, two men ran from the scene. One stopped and threatened an officer. He had a tool in his hand. The 33-year-old Belleville police officer feared for his life, so he fired a shot, according to police.
Gonzales was taken to an area hospital where he died. Police said the officer has been a member of the Belleville Police Department since 2004.
Police had the second person transported to an area hospital to be checked out. He was not injured, but police were concerned about his mental health.
West Main was closed in both directions between 76th and 78th streets during the investigation, but police opened one eastbound lane by 12:35 p.m.
