Jefferson County, MO (KSDK) - Some local law enforcement is going cyber.

Normally, police ask for anonymous tips by phone, but now the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is asking for emails.

The department has two new addresses for anonymous tips.

Sheriff Glenn Boyer says the department gets 85 percent of its information about possible meth labs from tipsters. So, he hopes the convenience of email will make it that much easier to catch criminals.

"In today's times everybody uses their cell phone. Everybody's texting one another and so forth and so on. So we just thought this would be a more convenient way for the citizens to get us information in a time of need," said f Boyer.

CrimeStoppers in St. Louis uses a phone, email and text system.

In the six years since its creation, the program has received more than 5,800 tips which have led to nearly 350 arrests.
