Union, MO (KSDK)- A berry picking outing ended in tragedy Monday evening, with the drowning of a two year girl in a Franklin County swimming pool.
Sheriff Gary Toelke tells News Channel 5 Harley Hege was at her great grandmothers home in the Deep Woods subdivision off Highway K near St. Clair when the accident occurred around 6:00 p.m.
Officials say the great grandmother has guardianship of the little girl and was picking berries with the child, when the little girl said she wanted to go into the house.
Just minutes later; after the woman did not see the child in or near the house, she and several other children began searching the area.
It was then that little Harley was discovered at the bottom of the swimming pool. The grandmother got the child from the pool and began CPR until paramedics arrived.
The child was taken to a Washington Missouri hospital where she was pronounced dead.
