St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A heat wave that hasn't been experienced so early in the summer in more than a half century continues blasting the region today.

Again this afternoon, temperatures will likely break records with a high temperature forecast of 108. This would tie yesterday as the hottest temperature ever recorded during the month of June since 1874.

In addition, the forecast calls for high temperatures to remain above 100 degrees into the weekend. St. Louis has not recorded three consecutive days at or above 100 degrees in the month of June since 1954.

The recent dry weather is causing the drought conditions to worsen as well. Estimates are that this May and June period in Missouri will end up being the sixth driest on record. No widespread rainfall is forecast in the near future which means the drought will intensify.

The intensifying drought conditions and the extreme June heat  are reminiscent of some of the most historic drought years of 1936, 1954 and 1988.
