East St. Louis, IL (KSDK) - A fugitive on the run for 12 years will be extradited from Peru to East St. Louis, to face federal charges.
Juan M. Rios, M.D., 65, will face charges related to defrauding various health care benefit programs of more than $1 million, mail fraud, misuse of a social security card, and failure to appear in court.
Rios failed to appear in court on December 9, 1999.
He was originally released from jail in November 1999 on a $3.5 million bond. He was required to post $350,000 in cash.
Rios, a former Florissant, Missouri resident, is accused of billing insurance companies over $1 million for services he never performed as a doctor, fraudulently claiming disability insurance proceeds and using a social security number that did not belong to him. He had offices in Collinsville and Bethalto, Illinois.
If Rios is convicted, he faces up to 35 years in prison, fines up to $1.5 million, and three years of supervised release.
