CHICAGO (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn is urging Illinois residents to take precautions to stay cool and check on those vulnerable to the heat as the forecast calls for high temperatures.

Quinn says more than 120 cooling centers are open around Illinois to help people who don't have air conditioning. Those centers are in Illinois Department of Human Services offices and at Illinois Tollway Oases in suburban Chicago.

In a statement Thursday, Quinn says it is crucial for people to take steps to stay safe because extreme temperatures can be fatal. He's urging people to avoid spending too much time outside and to check on neighbors and relatives, particularly children and the elderly.
