(KSDK)-East St. Louis Metrolink train service was interrupted for a while in the Metro-East Saturday afternoon after a fatal, single car crash at a train crossing.
It happened on Kingshighway south of I-64 about 2:00 in East St. Louis near the Washington Park station.
East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said the adult male driver was driving a Chevy Malibu stolen about 9:00 Saturday morning in East St. Louis.
Chief Floore says the driver was heading south on Kingshighway, driving at a high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, the driver collided with a metal pole that supports the railroad lights.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Floore said, "Witnesses say the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. He lost control and hit guard rail at Metrolink train track."
The incident did interrupt Metrolink train service for a time. Metro officials say passengers were being transported by bus from the Emerson Park Station to Fairview Heights.
A Metro train did pass through the crossing at 4:25 p.m. Saturday.
