Arnold, Mo (KSDK) -- An Arnold family is preparing to say its final goodbyes to a beloved son and brother.

On Sunday, 15-year old Mitchell Maserang was struck and killed by a freight train.

He was wearing earbuds at the time.

Carol Maserang, his grief-stricken mother, is devastated. She was surrounded by family and friends on this Fourth of July but there's a great sadness in her heart.

Mitchell was on his way to a Wentzville flea market, listening to the music on his iPod.

He apparently did not hear the train, nor the people shouting warnings.

Mitchell's older brother Nick, cut off one of the earbuds on his iPod vowing like other friends, to always have one ear clear for emergencies.

Mitchell was to have been a sophomore this fall at Fox High School in Arnold.

Carol called her youngest child her "baby."

He was a nice boy, she said, who would help anyone.

Visitation for Mitchell will be Friday at Baue Funeral Home from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The funeral will take place there at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Mitchell's eyes, heart and bone marrow have been donated.
