St. Louis (KSDK) - We're getting a break from the high temperatures, but that doesn't mean the danger is completely gone.
Even the 80s can create risky conditions in cars.
After ten days above 100 degrees, you might be tempted to let your guard down, but you still have to be very careful when it comes to children and pets in vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service, even at 80 degrees, sunshine can quickly heat up a closed car.
After ten minutes, the temperature jumps to 99 degrees.
After 20 minutes, it can soar to 109, and in 30 minutes, it could be 114 degrees.
The temperature just keeps increasing, in some cases as high as 123 degrees, after an hour of direct sunlight exposure.
