St. Louis (KSDK) - For the first time in nearly 17 months we can say traffic is moving along the Grand Boulevard overpass at Interstate 64.

Crews re-opened one lane in each direction around 2:45 p.m. Friday.

The outside lanes in each direction are still closed because crews still have a lot of what they call "prettying up" to do, but two lanes open sure beats none.

It was a low-key opening Friday. Crews just much moved barriers and started letting cars onto the bridge.

But as drivers cross, they'll notice cones are still up and lane closure signs are still out. That's because workers still need to do a number of things.

They plan to fill the median with plants so it'll look similar to Market Street downtown. They will also be painting the large towers on both sides of the bridge, so the closed lanes will probably shift over the next few days.

The sidewalks will remain open during these last few phases.

People in the area are just happy to be able to cross the interstate again.

"I'm a SLU student and I live here and I'm also a shuttle driver for SLU, so I'm having to go over to the med campus and back here constantly so it's really going to be great to have the bridge back open so I can get back and forth a lot more easily," said Phil Pierson.

You may be wondering about the MetroLink station. So far, there's no solid date for its re-opening yet, but the estimate is sometime in the next few weeks, maybe early to mid-August.
