WHDH - A Massachusetts prison guard is lucky to be alive after he was stabbed with a piece of metal by an inmate.

Nate Beauvais' X-ray is an incredible sight.

"He was that close to dying. And you can see how far it went through his neck," said Nicole Beauvais, wife. "The shank missed his spinal cord by half a centimeter."

It shows a whittled down piece of metal his wife says an inmate used to stab him while working at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center last month.

"He was just doing a round around the prison and the prisoner came at him from behind with the knife and stabbed him. Of course, he fell right to the ground," said Nicole Beauvais.

The Department of Correction says the incident that sent seven officers to the hospital is still under investigation.

This isn't the first time Nicole Beauvais' husband has been injured during his four years at the maximum security prison.

"He had been assaulted before a year ago. But it was a black eye and a broken nose. That's what I was expecting to see again. To find out he had been stabbed, it was overwhelming," Beauvais said.

The homemade weapon that nearly killed Nate Beauvais almost left him a quadriplegic, but with a table full of medication and just as many doctors appointments, he's on his road to recovery.

"We're just so thankful and excited that he's here. I think we're seeing more of the blessing in the situation that he could have died and he didn't. Being angry was the last thing on our minds at that point. It was a miracle. I truly believe it was a miracle," Beauvais said.

Nate Beauvais says he sees the incident as a second lease on life.

In fact, he wants to get involved in a children's ministry to help them stay out of prison.
