St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A St. Louis jury has convicted a north city man of murder in the May 2011 shooting death of a seven year old child who was struck by random gunfire while playing on a playground outside the housing complex where she was visiting.
49 year old Elvis Smith was originally charged with first degree assault after firing shots that struck J'Nylah Douglas in the head. The charge was later upgraded to murder when the little girl died several days later.
Police say Smith was shooting at another man following an argument over a drug deal when one of the bullets fired by Smith hit the child.
Smith was also convicted of several other felony charges at the conclusion of his trial in St. Louis Circuit Court Thursday afternoon.
Smith will be sentenced later this year.
