St. Charles County (KSDK) - A social service agency in St. Charles County is running out of air conditioners.
Officials at Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Service say last year they provided various forms of assistance to 3,500 people from 1,000 different families.
"We've given out roughly 40 air conditioners this month, maybe more," said Yvonne Tihen, a volunteer. "I didn't take an exact count before we got these in. In addition, through our repairing homes program, we repair air conditioning systems in homes."
Tihen said a typical client in St. Charles County is a single mother with three or four children. Many of those clients have large electric bills so volunteers step in and try to help them avoid disconnection.
"Depending on the amount they owe, we do our best to help the families and sometimes we cooperate with other agencies to help pay the bills," said Tihen.
Locked away in an interior closet in their building are 25 air conditioners Ameren UE provided for Sts. Joachim and Ann to donate to people in need. They've already given away more than 40 air conditioners this month.
So what happens when they run out?
"Then we go out in community and beg for more air conditioners," said Tihen. "Because we won't have any other funding coming in specifically for air conditioners."
Tihen said they Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Service is donation-dependent.
"Yes, we receive government grants for our utility bill assistance," she said. "But when it comes to things, like air-conditioners, we are donation-dependent."
The address of Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service is 4116 McClay Road; St. Charles, MO 63304. Tihen said they either need air conditioners or money to buy air conditioners.
"We prefer money because we know what we can get," she said. "We know where to shop to get the best buy."
What they don't need are used air conditioners.
"No," she said, "we do not want used air conditioners. We do not want to give our clients another problem."
