St. Charles County, MO (KSDK) - The search for suspected gunman Richard Heeter in St. Charles County ended with authorities shooting and killing him, according to St. Charles County Sheriff Thomas Neer.

The search for Heeter began after two county deputies were shot early Wednesday.

Officials said it began when deputies responded to a shots fired call at a residence in the 2300 Circle Drive around 1:00 a.m.

Two deputies were walking toward the residence when one was shot in the arm by the unidentified gunman.  A third deputy who arrived was also struck in the arm by gunfire before he was able to get out of his patrol car.

The St. Louis County SWAT Team was called to the scene to take Heeter into custody, Sheriff Neer said.

Heeter approached the SWAT Team with a concealed knife and stabbed one member of the group before being shot, Neer said.

Both of the deputies were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of what are described as non-life threatening injuries; however, as Sheriff Neer stated, "Anytime someone is shot, it's not minor."

The wounded deputies are reported to be in stable condition.  St. Charles County Lt. David Tiefenbrunn indicated both of the deputies were shot in the arm.

A ground search was underway for several hours with several dozen officers as well as an aerial search by helicopter for the alleged shooter.

Authorities say two men were taken into custody at the  crime scene, but neither was believed to be the person who fired on the deputies.
