Dr. Anthony Calandro, employee indicted on federal healthcare fraud charges

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A Chesterfield chiropractor, one of this employees, and his practice have been indicted for allegedly billing insurance companies for services that were never rendered and charging employees for appointments they missed or canceled, US Attorney Richard Callahan said Wednesday.

According to the indictment, Dr. Anthony Calandro and his billing assistant, Sherry Rueter, lied to several companies by billing them for services that were never provided to patients. Their alleged scheme went on from 2006 to 2011.

In 2010 and 2011, undercover investigators discovered what Calandro, 55, and Rueter, 62, were doing.

A federal grand jury indicted Dr. Anthony Calandro, Sherry Rueter and Chiropractic Accident Centre of Crestwood, P.C. on one count of health care fraud and four counts of making false statements related to health care services.

If convicted, each count of health care fraud carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. Each count of making false statements relating to health care services carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. The corporation faces fines up to $500,000 per count in the indictment.

The defendants may be subject to forfeiture if found guilty in order to repay the money the stole from the government.
