Driver cited with DWI after colliding with police van on Marcus Avenue

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) -   A Metropolitan St. Louis Police officer suffered a head injury overnight after the police van he was driving to a crime scene was broadsided by an alleged drunk driver in north St. Louis.

Officials say the unidentified policeman was transported to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries after the collision on Marcus at St. Louis Avenue.

Investigators say the officer was driving a prisoner transport van to a burglary scene in north city just after 2:00 a.m. when he was t-boned in the intersection by the unidentified 29 year old DWI suspect. 

Witnesses say the suspect was traveling at excessive speed on Marcus and ran a stop sign before crashing into the police van and knocking the van onto its side.

The suspect was also injured and transported to a hospital.

Police say the officer involved in the crash is a 29 year veteran of the force.
