South St. Louis (KSDK) - A 40-year-old homeless man claims he was doused with gasoline and set on fire early Friday in south St. Louis.

Investigators say the unidentified victim was transported to an area hospital where he's listed in critical, but stable condition with extensive burns.

Police were called to help a person in the 3900 block of Illinois Avenue around 1:45 a.m. Friday.  Upon arrival, police located the man set ablaze and a garage also burning behind a home at 3939 Illinois.

Firefighters responded and extinguished the fires and paramedics took the victim to the hospital.  Overhead power lines were also burned in the garage fire and more than 50 Ameren customers in the area were without power.

Late Friday morning, St. Louis police said they had classified the incident as "non-criminal" but would not elaborate further.
