St. Louis (KSDK) - Nearly 80 people were nominated by you for our Making a Difference Gold Medal.

We now introduce you to some people who give away bicycles to kids, not only here in St. Louis, but around the world at BWorks.

The wheels are always turning at BWorks, which has connected kids with bikes for more than 20 years.

This is our bike shop. We will process over 4,000 bikes this year of which we will donate about 1,200 bikes to kids," said Mark Kaiser.

But before putting their feet on the pedals, the kids have to put their brains to work in the classroom.

"Our curriculum is five weeks, two hours a week, and they go through every aspect of bike mechanics. These are bike puzzles here for fix a flat. They learn how to change a tire. They also learn how to fix breaks," said Kaiser.

Kaiser is BWorks' Board President. His enthusiasm for the program is contagious.

"Part of our mission is we don't want any bike to go to a landfill so if the bike doesn't fit into our program or we can't give a bike away to a young child or can't ship a bike overseas to somebody who needs it, we recycle everything. So it's add water and stir! Everything's good," he said.

BWorks also provides computer training for kids and a computer at the end of the seven week course.

"We're helping kids. We're reaching out to kids and giving them an opportunity they wouldn't normally have," he said.

But the work doesn't stop there.

"Our third b in our works is book works. What we do is one-on-one mentorship with children around literacy, and we help children create books," said Kaiser.

What started as giving bikes to some neighborhood kids has grown into providing opportunities for a strong future.
