St. Louis (KSDK) - St. Louis is filled with gold medalists, and not just in the sports arena. During these summer games, we wanted to recognize 10 outstanding individual who are making a difference in our community.

You could say that Sharon Maag has a passion for animals. But that would be an understatement.

"I spent seven weeks in Katrina. I did go to Baghdad, brought back two dogs. I've done hurricanes, fires, I've done 21 disasters," said Maag.

So Sharon started SNUGGLE, a group dedicated to caring for special needs pets.

"I truly believe that this is what I was put here to do," said Maag.

From cleft palates to missing legs, Sharon and her group of volunteers work to help animals that wouldn't otherwise have a chance at a normal life.

"Our mission statement is 'You don't have to be whole to be happy,'" said Maag.

And it's that happiness that Sharon works for every day.
