Folsom, CA (KCRA/CNN) - Authorities say a couple in California reported finding the body of a newborn in their backyard.
As Sharokina Shams reports, little information is known about this case, and there are a lot of unanswered questions.
"In my 14 years here with Folsom, this is the first one that I've encountered," said Sgt. Chris Emery.
It's the first time Sgt. Emery has heard of anyone walking away from a newborn baby in Folsom. What made it more puzzling is that it was found in someone's backyard.
"I don't believe they're suspected of any wrongdoings. They called us and we went out to look into it," said Sgt. Emery.
Emery would not reveal the conditions the baby was found it, whether it was wrapped or clothed, but said there were no obvious signs of trauma.
"They're nice people, nice people," said neighbor Diane Kim.
Neighbors say the couple has lived here for about 12 years.
"I just hope that they find some kind of peace with everything going on; I hope that they're not involved," said Kim.
Neighbors watched police go in and out of the home Sunday and Monday but say they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary before that.
"The neighbors and I were talking and we all have dogs so a dog would be alerted if someone's in the yard so you know, they could have chosen the house randomly, for whatever reason. It's just very odd," said Tracy McPeak.
Police say the couple told them they'd just returned home from vacation Sunday afternoon.
"In fact, we don't even know if a crime's been committed or has occurred. And that's one of the reasons why we're holding back, and wanting to see which way the evidence leads us," said Sgt. Emery.
The Sacramento County coroner will do an autopsy to determine the baby's cause of death.
Perhaps just as important to the investigators will be knowing a time of death.
They are using this as a chance to remind people that they can leave babies at safe zones like police and fire stations.
