East St. Louis, IL (KSDK) - A body was pulled from a lake in Frank Holten State Park in the Metro East late Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday morning, officials say the body has been identified as David Lichtenegger of Fairview Heights.

The park is popular for fishing and water craft. It's located in St. Clair County, tucked between East St. Louis and Centreville.

It appears Lichtenegger may have been kayaking.

A state park employee made the discovery of his body on Grand Marias Lake shortly after 5 p.m., just south of Interstate 255 and State Street.

The body was floating along the shoreline in an area near a road and parking lot.

"We got a call earlier today about an overturned kayak," said officer Robert Liebl, a conservation police officer with the Illinois Department Of Natural Resources Police. "One of our officers showed up on scene and found the kayak and shortly thereafter found the subject floating in the water. Right now, unfortunately, that's all we know."

Police and fire departments from around the area were on hand but no fire boats were put in the water.

Investigators say they're trying to determine exactly what happened and right now, can't even confirm that this was an accident.

Police say the investigation into Lichtenegger's death continues.
