St. Louis (KSDK) -  A three-alarm fire overnight has heavily damaged a historic landmark near downtown St. Louis.

Firefighters were called out after midnight to the building in the 1500 block of Papin Street and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the multiple-story structure.

Records show the property is the former St. Mary's infirmary which was built in 1889.

The intense fire made its way to the roof of the building, and portions of the roof began sagging inward due to the fire and water used to contain the fire.

Firefighters were quickly instructed to evacuate the building due to concerns over it collapsing.  No injuries were reported and no cause for the fire has been cited.

Fire officials were unable to say whether the building was currently being used.  The investigation continues.
