East St. Louis, Ill (KSDK) -- A new Metro East Police District Commission will be created to help oversee several police departments, according to St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly.
Governor Pat Quinn came come to East St. Louis Thursday afternoon to sign the bill establishing the district that will coordinate with police departments in East St. Louis, Washington Park, Alorton and Brooklyn.
The district will regulate and set standards for the departments in such areas as evidence collection, ethics training, weapons use.
It will also develop plans for improving facilities, implementing best practices for community policing, and devising other strategic initiatives.
The bill also allows the district to use local TIF money to hire additional police officers.
