St. Louis County (KSDK) - Janice Hammonds, the St. Louis County Recorder of Deeds, is issuing a warning to property owners to be aware of companies trying to provide certified copies of their property deed for a fee.

She says property owners in St. Louis County are being targeted by mailed solicitations of an official-looking letter offering to obtain a certified deed for a payment of $59.50 or more.

Hammond says owners can request deed copies in person, via e-mail or electronically by downloading an order form from the Department of Revenue website.

Most property deeds are between one and two pages long and a copy from St. Louis County will cost a property owner $3, while a certified copy will cost $4. The county accepts payments in cash, check, or money order.
