St. Charles, MO (KSDK) -- A local car dealership got lucky when thieves failed at what could have been multiple car thefts on Sunday.

18-year-old Anthony Smith and 18-year-old Dante Keller are charged with burglary, property damage, and attempted stealing.

St. Charles Police said they had received reports of multiple subjects tampering with vehicles in the lot of Pundmann Ford in the 2700 block of West Clay around 1:45 a.m.

When police arrived at the scene, the subjects scattered and fled the area. Police say they were able to later capture 2 of the subjects, Smith and Keller, who ran across I-70 during their attempted getaway.

After investigation the scene, police said the suspects burglarized the used car office and took off with keys to multiple vehicles. The suspects then lined several of the vehicles up near a gate in preparation for a clean getaway, but the truck they were using to try and break down the metal and concrete security posts failed to knock them down.

Police believe the suspects then resorted to plan B, which was to try and break through the gate with a full-size van, but were interrupted when officers arrived at the scene.

Anyone with more information on this incident is asked to contact the St. Charles Police Department at 636-949-3300.
