St. Louis (KSDK) - The FBI and Capitol Police in Washington D.C. are investigating threats made against Congressman Todd Akin, his family, and congressional staff.
NewsChannel 5's Leisa Zigman has been in contact with Capitol Police and confirmed the threats.
Congressman Akin has been the target of venom and contempt on both the left and the right since using the words "legitimate rape" and saying a victim could "shut the whole thing down."
Over the last 24 hours threats have been made by phone and through statements that law enforcement is taking very seriously.
Lt. Kim Schneider in Washington D.C. said, "The U.S. Capitol Police are currently working with the FBI on a reported threat against Congressman Akin. This is an active, open investigation. We don't discuss the security of Members of Congress."
Capitol Police say they won't comment any further because it's an open investigation.
Sources say "Ambassador A," a self-described troll is under investigation for tweeting "I am going to legitimately rape your wife. ;) don't worry her body will defend her."
He also tweeted, "My good sir. Kill yourself."
A spokesperson for Congressman Akin's office said, "I can verify that the Capitol police are working with an outside law enforcement agency regarding threatening contact with our official office. The office of Congressman Akin has received threats of rape of his official staff, family and the Congressman himself along with suggestions that individuals should die."
