Cranston, RI (WPRI/CNN) - Good service went a long way for a Rhode Island waitress.
A customer left the single mother a tip for more than $450.
As a waitress, Kristen Ruggiero makes about $60 per night, $100 on a good night.
"A lot of people don't realize we make $2.89 an hour, some people think we make minimum or more," said Ruggiero.
But one day she got at tip she never expected. A couple came in to Uncle Tony's in Cranston July 3, and really liked her waitress. So they let her know.
"I said, 'I'll be right back with your change.' And they said, 'No you're all set.' And I said, 'Have a good night, and then I looked in the book and there were five $100 bills. And the check was $42," she said.
At first she thought she counted wrong, but she was right, a $458 tip.
"I was able to pay a couple of bills, because it's tough, you know, struggling day by day," she said.
The regulars have seen Ruggiero at the restaurant for 15 years and they say she earned that big tip and more.
"Kristen is just a phenomenal young lady, she remembers you when you come in, she remembers what you order," said customer Bob Lancia.
"I love the customers. I just love coming to work," said Ruggiero.
