St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Saint Louis University men's basketball coach Rick Majerus will miss the upcoming season due to health issues, NewsChannel 5's Frank Cusumano has learned.
In the summer of 2011, Majerus missed time to have a stent put in his heart.
"Rick is in a California hospital undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition," Director of Athletics Chris May said. "His health is the most important issue right now, and our hope is for full and complete recovery."
Rick Majerus guided the Billikens to a 26-8 record last season, the second most wins in school history. The season culminated with the school's first NCAA Tournament berth since 1998. SLU won its first-round match, its first tournament victory since 1994.
Majerus has had to take time off on three separate occasions for health reasons in the past, but never at the start of the season.
Assistant Jim Crews will become interim coach this season.
He will begin his duties immediately.
