St. Louis (KSDK) - A St. Louis police detective says we have to change our lifestyles because criminals already have.
Joe Mayberry is also a self-defense instructor at the St. Louis Combat Institute. He says what we've always been taught, the theory of just giving into a gunman and handing over our purse or wallet, may be a thing of the past.
"People aren't considered people anymore, they are objects, objects that can be shot, killed with no remorse it's as easy as turning off a video game," says Mayberry on the mentality of most shooters.
He says when you are faced with a gunman, it's a 50-50 shot.
He says three things you need to remember, be aware of your surroundings, educate yourself and learn how to defend yourself.
