St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Family members said Wilie Anderson, a 54-year-old man, was shot and killed by St. Louis police Thursday morning.

The officer-involved shooting happened in north St. Louis in the 5800 block of Era around 3:35 a.m. Thursday.

Police say they were called to the scene for a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived they were told by the residents that a family member was inside the garage and they were trying to get him out. Officers found the 54-year-old male causing a disturbance in the garage. When officers approached the man, he charged at them waving a machete.

When the man refused to drop the machete, one officer fired at him, striking him twice. The male was hit once in the stomach and once in the hand. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died.

No officers were injured during the shooting.

Anderson's family said he had a history of substance abuse and do not blame the St. Louis police for the shooting.

Police say the officer who fired the shots is a 26-year-old male who is a two year veteran of the department.

This is the 15th officer-involved shooting in St. Louis city this year, five of those shootings have been deadly.
