PORTLAND, ME (AP) - A 10-year-old girl has been charged in central Maine with manslaughter in the death of an infant.
Police announced the charge Thursday, a day after the July death was declared a homicide. Police declined to identify the girl, who is due in juvenile court in October.
Police say a Fairfield baby sitter called police to report the infant was not breathing, but police declined to say whether the 10-year-old was the sitter.
The girl is custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the girl is the youngest person in Maine to be charged with manslaughter in at least 25 years.
