St. Louis (KSDK) -- In every major storm, there are images of pets being rescued.
Often when people are preparing for disasters, people don't have a plan for their pets.
Mike Perkins from the Humane Society of Missouri joined NewsChannel 5's Dana Dean to tell us how to keep pets safe when severe weather strikes.
Items to include in a pet emergency kit:
o Food and water supplies for at least five days for each pet
o Medications and copies of medical records (ideally stored in a waterproof container)
o Leashes, harnesses, and carriers to transport pets and keep them secure
o Current photos and descriptions of your pets to help others ID them in case you become separated
o Name and number of your vet
o List of places and people that might take care of pets during emergency situations
Also, be sure your pet is wearing up-to-date identification. Microchipping is a permanent way to ID pets and help ensure a safe return if lost.
Take your pet with you if you must evacuate.
