St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A rumbling in the Steeleville, Illinois area had some residents thinking they'd experienced a small earthquake Wednesday morning.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) sent out an alert sometime after 7 a.m. for a 2.5 magnitude earthquake near Steeleville.
NewsChannel 5 twitted about the earthquake and other media outlets began reporting the event.
The alert was removed from the USGS website an hour later.
NewsChannel 5 got in touch with a seismologist at the USGS, who said the rumbling was caused by a mining blast. The seismologist said the USGS inadvertently sent out that first alert.
