University City, MO (KSDK) - A $24,990,000 grant has been accepted by the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District from the Federal Transit Administration.
The grant was initially approved for the Loop Trolley in July 2010, but only the funding for design work was released. The Loop Trolley Transportation Development District says this final approval allows for access to the balance of funds to begin construction.
The 2.2 mile fixed track trolley line will span from the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park to the University City Library.
Voters in University City and St. Louis approved this project in 2007.
Annual operation costs are expected to be around $1.3 million, and will be supported by $600,000 from fares, $500,000 from the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District, and $200,000 from advertising and institutional subsidies.
The trolley should open in mid-2014.
