Jersey County, IL (KSDK) - A 28-year-old Wood River man was killed and a 36-year-old seriously injured in a motorcycle accident late Sunday afternoon, the Illinois State Police said.
According to Illinois State Police, the accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. on IL Route 100 north of Chautagua Road.
A 54-year-old Glen Carbon woman was driving a 2011 Hyundai Sonata southbound in the left lane of Route 100 when she noticed a motorcycle approaching her from behind at what authorities called a high rate of speed.
The driver of the Hyundai attempted to change lanes to get out of the way of the motorcycle. However, the motorcyclist changed lanes around the same time and clipped the left rear bumper of the Hyundai. The driver and passenger on the motorcycle were thrown from the bike.
The motorcyclist, identified as Randy Pate Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, identified as Cynthia King of Granite City, was airlifted to St. John Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.
Illinois State Police said Pate was not wearing a helmet, but King was wearing one.
