O'Fallon, MO (KSDK) - A local athlete who played semi-professional baseball for the Gateway Grizzlies and was a 2006 draft selection for the Chicago White Sox was killed over the weekend in an accident near his St. Charles County home.

Kent Gerst, an O'Fallon resident, was first reported missing on Sunday afternoon near the area of Peruque Creek off West Terra Court. Authorities assisted in the search for Gerst and located his body in the creek several hours later.

The St. Charles County Medical Examiner's Office says Gerst drowned after apparently falling from a small bluff into the creek.

Gerst, 24, was an outfielder who played the 2011 season with the Grizzlies. He attended Fort Zumwalt West High School.
