St. Ann, Mo (KSDK) - Briar Crest Elementary School will close at the end of the 2012-2013 year, pending Board of Education approval.
The Pattonville School District said the poor economy is to blame.
The district has not had an increase in revenue since 2007 due to declining property values, reductions in state funding and continued tax appeals by large commercial property owners.
The district said its operating budget has grown less than one-percent on average per year, for the past six years. because it has been cutting expenses.
In 1999 student enrollment was 367. Last year, it was 225 students.
The district plans to continue to own the building in case it needs it for enrollment purposes in the future.
Pattonville has developed a redistricting solution that will send Brian Crest students to Drummond Elementary and a smaller portion to Bridgeway Elementary. To accomodate the additional students, some current Drummond attendance areas will be shifted to Bridgeway Elementary and Parkway Elementary.
The changes will be as follows:
• All of the current Drummond attendance area east of Lindbergh Boulevard will remain at Drummond.
• All of the current Drummond attendance area west of Lindbergh Boulevard, north of St. Charles Rock Road and
east of McKelvey Road/Bonfils Road will remain at Drummond, except for the apartments/condos along
Monter Drive, which will attend Parkwood.
• The current Drummond attendance area west of McKelvey Road/Bonfils Road will attend Parkwood
• The section of the current Drummond attendance area south of St. Charles Rock Road and west of Lindbergh
Boulevard will attend Bridgeway.
• Streets/neighborhoods branching directly off of Link Road in the Briar Crest attendance area from Adie Road to
Midland will attend Bridgeway. The remainder of the current Briar Crest attendance area will attend Drummond
The middle school attendance boundaries will remain unchanged for next year. Students in the current attendance areas for Holman will go to Holman and those in the current attendance areas for Pattonville Heights will continue to go to Heights, regardless of the elementary changes.
The middle school attendance areas will be the same for at least another year to give the middle schools' school improvement teams time to work on redesigning their schools to meet higher student achievement standards and find cost-savings.
Parent meetings at the affected schools have been scheduled to explain these changes and give parents an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. Briar Crest and Drummond will host parent meetings at their schools at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17. Bridgeway, Parkwood, Holman and Pattonville Heights will host parent meetings at their schools at 7p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
