(CNN) -- Prince Harry was apparently in danger during an attack on a joint American-British base in Afghanistan where he's deployed.

British defense secretary Philip Hammond told the BBC the Prince was taken to a secure position when insurgents disguised as US soldiers stormed the base on Friday.

Hammond said "effective guard" was used to ensure Prince Harry's safety.

The Prince of Wales is a captain and helicopter pilot in the British military. His deployment to Afghanistan was announced earlier this month.

At the time, the Taliban said it would take extra efforts to capture or kill him.
