INDEPENDENCE, MO (AP) - Authorities say the driver of a Missouri Department of Transportation vehicle was struck and killed while shutting down Interstate 70 in suburban Kansas City after an earlier fatal crash.
KMBC-TV reports that I-70 was beginning to reopen after the early Friday crash.
The first crash happened around 1:45 a.m. Two people were ejected from their vehicles, and one of them died.
Emergency crews were at the scene of that crash when a vehicle hit a motor-assist truck around 2:45 a.m., causing it to burst into flames. The motorist-assist driver was hit outside his vehicle and died at the scene.
Motor-assist drivers patrol major roadways, and their duties include helping with traffic control.
The driver who hit the motor-assist truck was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
