St. Louis (KSDK) - It's never nice to call people names, but Jay Thompson is a self-proclaimed curmudgeon. It says so on his website.

"I think as you get older you don't have to agree with everything everybody says," Thompson explained.

He's also a rather interesting guy with a wild imagination that comes to life through his art.

"This one here is called Got Milk," Thompson said.

It's a collection he calls Cat Works and others call, "I've heard creepy, uh, weird," Thompson said.

Each piece comes with a story which makes it sort of hard to get a straight answer about what it takes to create a piece.

"So that's made up of almost 40 photographs," Thompson explained.

That's true and so is the fact that every cat you see in his pieces is a shelter cat.

"I'll go shoot maybe 500, 600 shots hoping to get maybe 20 that I can use," Thompson said.

He doesn't forget the felines after that he donates artwork that the shelters then auction off. So he's not only creating fun, conversation-starting pieces, he's also giving something back and well that makes him at least a loveable curmudgeon.

You can see Cat Works in person at Taste of St. Louis weekend.
