Provo, Utah (KSL) -- A Utah woman has been arrested after police said a neighbor found the woman's two young children in a dumpster.
"I looked over here and I seen the little girl on top of the garbage and I seen the little boy just in his diaper and shirt climbing up here, trying to get in," said Nacole Eaton, who rescued the children.
Eaton ran across the parking lot to find they were all alone, with no adult in sight.
"They had no socks, no shoes. The little girl - she just had pants, no underwear or diaper," said Eaton.
She asked the three year old girl what they were doing and her response left her in tears.
"She said that she was hungry. She was trying to find something to eat," said Eaton.
She recognized the children and took them home, but no one would answer the door.
"It scared me. I would never imagine any kids being left out here with their mom dead asleep... especially, they were two and three," said Eaton.
She called police. Officers were about to into the apartment when 21-year-old Stephania Chavez opened the door. Officers were angry that they found two eight-month-old babies in the midst of a filthy apartment.
"Inside they found a very unkempt apartment. It was littered with multiple empty beer cans, diapers... to the point where it concerned them and they contacted DCFS who eventually took custody of all four children," said Sgt. Brandon Post of the Provo Police Department.
Eaton is relieved the children will never have to be on their own again.
"I'm glad the kids are okay... and then I got a call from the cop telling me thank you, he appreciates all my help. So it makes me feel good that I was able to help two little kids that deserve it," said Eaton.
