St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A north St. Louis man was sentenced Friday for killing a child.
Elvis Smith, 49, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the May 2011 shooting death of 7-year-old J'Nylah Douglas who was struck by a random bullet Smith admitted firing.
According to testimony at the trial in July, Smith told jurors he was shooting at another man in self defense following a drug deal gone awry. One of the bullets traveled in the playground at the Clinton Peabody complex where the child was playing, striking the little girl in the head.
J'Nylah died several days later from her injuries.
Smith received life in prison for first-degree murder, and 30 years in prison for an armed criminal action charge.
