Man flees and crashes after nearly running over Brooklyn officer,

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A man is in custody after crashing a sport utility vehicle in south St. Louis, an collision that ended a pursuit by Brooklyn Police from Illinois to south St. Louis.

Officers from Brooklyn began pursuing the driver and SUV after reports the man nearly struck a police officer around 2:31 a.m. Wednesday.

The pursuit crossed the Poplar Street Bridge through downtown St. Louis and westbound on Interstate 64 where the fleeing driver exited the highway and went south on Kinshighway.

The driver tried to elude police by turning off Kingshighway onto Fyler, then onto Lawn Avenue.

The suspect lost control while turning onto Lawn and ended up slamming into a tree.

Police and paramedics ran to the man's aid, and took him into custody before having him transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

No officers were hurt and the driver involved has not been identified pending the filing of charges.
